A child experienced delayed eyelid swelling after eye trauma. Treatment with hyaluronidase and tarsorrhaphy rapidly resolved the severe swelling and restored normal eyelid position.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Pediatric Medicine
  • Trauma Surgery

Background:

  • Periorbital trauma can lead to delayed complications.
  • Eyelid edema and chemosis require prompt diagnosis and management.

Observation:

  • A 3-year-old girl presented with delayed upper eyelid edema and severe conjunctival swelling (chemosis) after blunt periorbital trauma.
  • Examination revealed a tightly everted upper tarsus compressing the conjunctiva.

Findings:

  • Subconjunctival injection of hyaluronidase was administered.
  • Local compression and temporary tarsorrhaphy were performed.

Implications:

  • This treatment approach led to rapid resolution of chemosis.
  • Normal eyelid position was restored, indicating an effective management strategy for this rare complication of periorbital trauma.
