Experience with the care of over 7,000 children with acute illnesses has shown that most need either no medication at all or can be adequately managed from a choice of but a handful of drugs precisely prescribed. A knowledge of rational therapeutics can decrease polypharmacy, the high cost of illness, and the risk of iatrogenic disease.
