Summary

Coenzyme Q10 supplementation improved ocular motility in a patient with chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia (CPEO). This finding suggests CoQ10 may help limit ophthalmoplegia progression.

Background:

  • Chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia (CPEO) is a debilitating neuromuscular disorder affecting eye movements.

  • Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a vital component of the mitochondrial electron transport chain.

Observation:

  • A single patient diagnosed with CPEO was treated with Coenzyme Q10.
  • The treatment involved daily supplementation of 300 mg CoQ10 for three years.
  • A brief trial of 200 mg daily was conducted after one year.

Findings:

  • Significant improvement in ocular motility was observed during CoQ10 treatment.
  • Ocular ductions, measured by synoptophore, demonstrated enhancement.
  • The positive effects on eye movements were sustained throughout the treatment period.
