1N. Gh. Lupu Institute of Internal Medicine, Bucharest, Romania.
Insights
Echocardiography effectively analyzes left ventricular wall motion to detect coronary artery disease. Dobutamine stress echocardiography is a safe and accurate diagnostic tool, especially for patients unable to exercise.
Area of Science:
- Cardiology
- Medical Imaging
Background:
- Echocardiography is a valuable tool for assessing left ventricular wall motion.
- It aids in identifying coronary artery disease (CAD) when combined with stress protocols.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the utility of echocardiography, particularly dobutamine stress echocardiography, in diagnosing coronary artery disease.
- To explore its role in risk assessment and prognosis after myocardial infarction.
Main Methods:
- Utilizing echocardiography to analyze regional left ventricular wall motion.
- Employing exercise or pharmacologic stress (dobutamine infusion) to induce ischemia.
- Correlating induced wall motion abnormalities with the presence of CAD.
Main Results:
- Echocardiography accurately identifies regional left ventricular wall motion abnormalities indicative of myocardial ischemia.
- Dobutamine stress echocardiography proves practical, safe, and accurate for diagnosing CAD in non-ambulatory patients.
- It serves as an indicator of myocardial viability and patient prognosis post-myocardial infarction.
Conclusions:
- Echocardiography, especially dobutamine stress echocardiography, is a reliable method for diagnosing coronary artery disease.
- It offers valuable insights into myocardial viability and patient prognosis.
Abstract:
Echocardiography is a very good technique for the analysis of total and regional left ventricular wall motion. It can be used, in conjunction with a protocol for either exercise or pharmacologic cardiovascular stress, to identify the presence and distribution of coronary artery disease. The presence of myocardial ischemia is proved by the induction by a regional left ventricular wall motion abnormality. The use of dobutamine infusion as a stress test associated with echocardiography is a practical method, safe and accurate for the diagnosis of coronary disease in patients unable to exercise. Dobutamine stress echocardiography can also be used for assessment of risk and patient prognosis after acute myocardial infarction and as an indicator of myocardial viability.
