Endoscopic size estimation can be improved with a new teaching protocol. This method significantly reduces estimation errors, especially for endoscopists early in their training.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To design and evaluate a clinical teaching protocol to improve endoscopists' size estimation accuracy.
  • To assess the retention of improved estimation skills over time.

  • Thirteen endoscopists estimated steel ball bearing sizes in a model colon using a videoendoscope.
  • Participants were taught to compensate for optic distortion and retested immediately and 1 month later.

Main Results:

  • Mean estimation error decreased from 28% before teaching to 8% immediately after teaching (p < .05).
