Researchers evaluated embolic materials for arterioportal embolization. Iodized oil (Lipiodol) mixed with absolute ethanol or Gelfoam powder proved most effective for simultaneous arterial and portal vein embolization in canine models.

Area of Science:

  • Interventional Radiology
  • Vascular Embolization
  • Hepatobiliary Imaging

Background:

  • Arterioportal embolization is a complex procedure.
  • Identifying optimal embolic agents is crucial for procedural success and minimizing complications.
  • Transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) is a minimally invasive technique used in interventional radiology.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of different embolic material combinations for simultaneous arterioportal embolization via the arterial route.
  • To determine the most suitable embolic agents for achieving effective embolization in both hepatic arterial and portal venous systems.

Main Methods:

  • Transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) was performed in 14 dogs.
  • Embolic agents tested included iodized oil (Lipiodol) mixed with n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate, absolute ethanol, or Gelfoam powder.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Lipiodol distribution was analyzed using soft tissue x-ray radiography and en bloc silver impregnation.
  • Main Results:

    • Lipiodol mixed with absolute ethanol demonstrated favorable distribution.
    • Lipiodol mixed with Gelfoam powder also showed promising distribution patterns.
    • The combination of Lipiodol with n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate was less optimal compared to the other two agents.

    Conclusions:

    • Iodized oil (Lipiodol) combined with absolute ethanol is a suitable embolic material for simultaneous arterioportal embolization.
    • Iodized oil (Lipiodol) combined with Gelfoam powder is also a reasonable choice for this procedure.
    • These findings provide valuable insights for selecting embolic agents in interventional radiology procedures targeting arterioportal shunts.
