Summary

Erythroderma, a severe skin condition, was most commonly linked to psoriasis, drug reactions, or reticulosis. Repeated skin biopsies are crucial for diagnosing the underlying cause of erythroderma.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Clinical Medicine
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Erythroderma is a significant dermatological condition characterized by widespread erythema and scaling.
  • Understanding the etiological profile of erythroderma is essential for effective patient management and treatment strategies.

Observation:

  • A 23-year analysis of 247 patients with erythroderma (duration >2 months) was conducted.
  • Patient ages ranged from 16 to 60 years, with a male-to-female ratio of 2:1.
  • Common presentations included diffuse erythema, scaling, and pruritus.

Findings:

  • Psoriasis was the most frequent underlying cause (44.9%), followed by drug reactions (7.3%) and reticulosis (4.1%).
  • In 29.2% of cases, the specific cause of erythroderma remained undetermined.
  • Skin biopsies, particularly repeated ones, were diagnostic or suggestive in 63.6% of cases, highlighting their importance in etiological diagnosis.

Implications:

  • Repeated skin biopsies are recommended as the optimal method for the etiological diagnosis of erythroderma.
  • The observed male predominance suggests potential sex-specific environmental exposures contributing to erythroderma development.
