Insights
Late surgical results for vertebrobasilar aneurysms show limited return to work. Many patients required disability pensions, highlighting long-term functional deficits after treatment.
Area of Science:
- Neurosurgery
- Vascular Surgery
- Neurology
Context:
- Presents late outcomes of surgical interventions for vertebrobasilar aneurysms.
- Analyzes data from 50 patients (76.9%) out of 100 surgically treated individuals.
- Focuses on functional recovery and long-term results post-surgery.
Purpose:
- To evaluate the late functional results and quality of life after surgery for vertebrobasilar aneurysms.
- To assess the rate of return to previous work or need for disability pensions.
Summary:
- Surgery was performed on 65 vertebrobasilar aneurysms in 100 patients.
- Late results were analyzed for 50 patients, with 41 deemed independent.
- Only 9 patients returned to their previous occupation, 6 changed jobs, and 32 received disability pensions.
Impact:
- The study indicates significant long-term functional impairment in a substantial portion of patients treated for vertebrobasilar aneurysms.
- Findings underscore the importance of considering long-term rehabilitation and socioeconomic support for these patients.
- Highlights the need for further research into optimizing surgical outcomes and patient recovery.
Abstract:
The author presents late results of surgery of 65 vertebrobasilar aneurysms (out of 100 patients treated operatively). The data were obtained from 50 patients (76.9% of all investigated). In spite of large number of independent patients (41), only 9 returned to previous work, and 6 changed their occupation, but 32 received disability pensions.
