    Background:

    • The conditioned taste aversion (CTA) paradigm is a widely used model to study associative learning.
    • Previous research has established CTA using various toxic agents, but its universal applicability remains under investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the universal validity of the conditioned taste aversion (CTA) paradigm.
    • To determine if different types of poisoning affect CTA development similarly.

    Main Methods:

    • Rats were trained to associate saccharin consumption (CS) with different sublethal poisons.
    • Poisons included LiCl, sodium malonate, BW 58-271, sodium cyanide, sodium iodoacetate, sodium fluoride, and gallamine triethiodide.
    • CTA was assessed by measuring saccharin consumption after a recovery period.

    Main Results:

    • Significant CTA was observed with LiCl, sodium iodoacetate, and sodium fluoride.
    • No CTA was developed with pyrrolopyrimidine, gallamine, sodium malonate, and cyanide.
    • The absence of CTA was not due to amnesia, as demonstrated by subsequent LiCl administration.

    Conclusions:

    • CTA is not universally induced by all types of poisoning.
    • The development of CTA depends on the specific physiological effects of the poison on interoceptors, rather than the overall severity of intoxication.
