Metabolically induced focal seizures: hyperosmolar non-ketoacidotic hyperglycemia

Focal epileptic activity with or without further neurological symptoms may be induced by hyperosmolar non-ketoacidotic hyperglycemia. This syndrome may develop in the course of various diseases and cerebral lesions, frequently during therapeutic dehydration. On the other hand, neurological disorders may arise as a secondary consequence of the metabolic disturbance. Based upon literature reports and eight own observations, the neurological aspects of non-ketoacidotic hyperglycemia and its therapy are described.
