Summary

Pulse oximetry does not accurately reflect fetal scalp pH in infants with abnormal cardiotocographs. Current technology limits its use as a replacement for scalp blood pH sampling during labor.

Background:

  • Cardiotocography (CTG) is used to assess fetal well-being during labor.
  • Abnormal CTG findings may necessitate further investigation, such as fetal scalp blood pH sampling.
  • Pulse oximetry is a non-invasive monitoring technique.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate if pulse oximetry can substitute for fetal scalp blood pH measurement.
  • To assess the correlation between pulse oximetry readings and scalp pH in neonates with abnormal CTGs.

Main Methods:

  • An experimental N400 pulse oximetry system was used to record average scalp oximetry readings during labor.
  • These readings were compared against fetal scalp blood pH values obtained via aerobic sampling.
