Carcinoma developing on a branchial cyst is rare. Clinicians should consider cystic metastasis from unknown squamous carcinoma when diagnosing neck masses.

Area of Science:

  • Head and Neck Surgery
  • Surgical Pathology
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Branchial cysts are common congenital anomalies of the neck.
  • Malignant transformation of branchial cysts is exceptionally rare.

Observation:

  • A 43-year-old man presented with a cystic neck mass, initially suspected as a branchial cyst.
  • Histopathological analysis revealed a carcinoma arising within the branchial cyst.

Findings:

  • Carcinoma developing on a branchial cyst is an exceedingly uncommon diagnosis.
  • Strict adherence to diagnostic criteria is essential for accurate diagnosis.

Implications:

  • Consider cystic metastasis of squamous cell carcinoma from an unknown primary when encountering such histopathology.
