Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Quality Improvement
  • General Practice Training

Background:

  • Summative assessment for general practitioner registrars is being introduced in 1996.
  • Audit projects are the chosen format for practical work assessment in West Scotland.
  • A need exists for a valid and reliable marking schedule for these audit projects.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop a criterion-referenced marking schedule.
  • To assess registrars' audit projects for summative assessment.

Main Methods:

  • Workshops with medical and non-medical professionals identified essential audit elements.
  • These elements were refined using registrars' audit projects.
  • Trainers rated 14 criteria for importance, and a final workshop developed the marking schedule.

Main Results:

  • 87% of 155 trainers responded to the criteria list.
  • Ten criteria were deemed essential or desirable by over 80% of respondents.
  • Five criteria were selected for the final marking schedule: defined reason for audit, relevance of criteria, preparation/planning, data interpretation, and proposals for change. All five are required for passing.

Conclusions:

  • A criterion-referenced marking schedule for registrar audit projects has been developed.
  • The schedule is based on trainers' opinions of essential audit criteria.
  • Further evaluation of the marking schedule is needed.
