Summary

Affective states do not modulate human perioral and trigemino-laryngeal reflexes. However, significant differences were found in early excitatory perioral response magnitudes between the right and left sides.

Background:

  • The eye-blink startle reflex is known to be modulated by affective states.
  • Orolaryngeal reflexes are theorized to be influenced by affective states, potentially impacting voice and speech production.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if human perioral and trigemino-laryngeal reflexes are sensitive to changes in affective state.
  • To explore the relationship between affective valence and orolaryngeal reflex modulation.

Main Methods:

  • 24 classically trained female sopranos sustained /m/ while viewing aversive, pleasant, or neutral slides.
  • Mechanical taps were applied to the upper lip, and perioral (orbicularis oris inferior EMG) and trigemino-laryngeal (voice fundamental frequency changes) reflexes were recorded.
  • Response magnitude and latency were compared across affective conditions.

Main Results:

  • No statistically significant differences in reflex magnitude or timing were observed across affective conditions (aversive, pleasant, neutral, or control).
  • Significant differences were found in the magnitude of early excitatory perioral responses between the right and left sides, independent of affective state.

Conclusions:

  • Affective state changes do not appear to modulate human perioral and trigemino-laryngeal reflexes.
  • Asymmetries in early excitatory perioral responses warrant further investigation regarding speech motor control.
