Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Vascular Medicine
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Colonic phlebitis is a rare condition.
  • Massive ascites and peritoneal effusion of serum protein are unusual complications.
  • Unknown etiology of phlebitis can pose diagnostic challenges.

Observation:

  • A 35-year-old woman presented with massive ascites and colonic wall thickening.
  • Peritoneal fluid analysis revealed high protein concentration, similar to serum levels.
  • Imaging showed edematous colon and significant peritoneal effusion.

Findings:

  • Histopathology confirmed extensive submucosal edema and vasculitis in the colon.
  • The cause of the colonic phlebitis remained unknown.
  • No systemic involvement was detected.

Implications:

  • This case highlights a unique presentation of colonic phlebitis with massive, protein-rich ascites.
  • The findings suggest a localized vasculitic process affecting the colon.
  • Further research is needed to understand the etiology and management of such cases.
