Area of Science:

  • Healthcare Management
  • Nursing Informatics
  • Health Economics

Background:

  • Current patient classification systems like Diagnosis Related Groups (DRGs) may not fully capture patient-centered activity and associated care costs.
  • Accurate workload evaluation is crucial for effective resource allocation and cost management in hospitals.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To develop and implement a system for evaluating patient care workload to complement existing DRG classifications.
  • To assess the feasibility and reliability of the chosen nursing acuity indicator for workload estimation.

Main Methods:

  • An application was developed and integrated into the automated medical record system.
  • The "Soins Infirmiers Individualisés à la Personne Soignée" (SIIPS) indicator was selected to quantify nursing acuity.

Related Experiment Videos

  • The system was implemented in ten hospital departments for initial testing.
  • Main Results:

    • The implementation demonstrated the system's feasibility within the hospital's automated medical record infrastructure.
    • The SIIPS indicator proved to be a reliable measure for estimating nursing acuity and patient care workload.

    Conclusions:

    • The developed system and SIIPS indicator are viable for enhancing patient-centered cost evaluation.
    • The successful initial results support the expansion of this system to all clinical departments.
