Nitrate reduction nitrogenase activity in Spirillum lipoferum1

C A Neyra, P Van Berkum

    Canadian Journal of Microbiology
    |March 1, 1977
    PubMed
    Summary

Spirillum lipoferum reduces nitrate and nitrite under various conditions. Nitrate stimulates anaerobic nitrogenase activity, suggesting a link between these processes in this bacterium.

    Area of Science:

    • Microbiology
    • Biochemistry

    Background:

    • Nitrate and nitrite reduction are key microbial processes.
    • Spirillum lipoferum's metabolic capabilities require further elucidation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate nitrate and nitrite reduction in Spirillum lipoferum under different oxygen conditions.
    • To explore the relationship between nitrate reduction and nitrogenase activity.

    Main Methods:

    • Culturing Spirillum lipoferum under aerobic, microaerophilic, and anaerobic conditions.
    • Measuring nitrate and nitrite accumulation in the medium and cells.
    • Assessing nitrate reductase activity (NRA) and nitrogenase (N2-ase) activity.

    Main Results:

    • Spirillum lipoferum demonstrated nitrate and nitrite reduction under all tested conditions.
    • Nitrite accumulated extracellularly during dissimilatory nitrate reduction.
    • Anaerobic NRA induction required nitrate and protein synthesis, and nitrate stimulated anaerobic N2-ase activity.

    Conclusions:

    • Nitrate and nitrite reduction are significant metabolic pathways in Spirillum lipoferum.
    • A direct relationship exists between nitrate reduction and nitrate-stimulated nitrogenase activity.
