Abstract:
We have investigated the prostatic bud induction in the urogenital sinus of fetal rats and mice when the sinuses were cultured with non-androgenic growth factors, and found that epidermal growth factor (EGF) as well as transforming growth factor-alpha (TGF-alpha) powerfully induces the prostatic buds in the absence of androgens even in the androgen-receptor-deficient Tfm sinuses. Immunofluorescence study revealed that endogenous EGF and EGF receptor exist in the sinus mesenchyme of 19.5-day fetal male rats, where many prostatic buds are appearing.
