Summary

Higher education and early breastfeeding decisions positively impact breastfeeding duration in new mothers. Early infant contact also plays a role, while feeding problems do not significantly affect how long mothers breastfeed.

Area of Science:

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Pediatrics
  • Public Health

Background:

  • Breastfeeding is crucial for infant health.
  • Understanding factors influencing breastfeeding duration is vital for public health initiatives.
  • Previous research indicates various prenatal and postnatal factors may affect breastfeeding outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the influence of prenatal intent and early postnatal experiences on breastfeeding duration among primiparas.
  • To identify key predictors of sustained breastfeeding in first-time mothers.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort study involving 78 primiparas.
  • Data collected on prenatal breastfeeding intentions, attitudes towards formula feeding, timing of breastfeeding decisions, and early postnatal experiences.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Breastfeeding duration assessed at 3 months postpartum.
  • Main Results:

    • Higher maternal education level was associated with longer breastfeeding duration.
    • Earlier timing of the breastfeeding decision and a longer intended duration correlated with sustained breastfeeding.
    • A negative attitude towards formula feeding was linked to longer breastfeeding.
    • The timing of the first breastfeed and mother-infant contact within 72 hours postpartum were significant factors.
    • Maternal commitment and confidence scores, as well as the number of feeding problems, were not significantly related to breastfeeding duration.

    Conclusions:

    • Prenatal factors like education and intent, alongside early postnatal experiences, are critical for breastfeeding duration in primiparas.
    • Targeted support for first-time mothers focusing on these identified factors may improve breastfeeding continuation rates.
    • Further research could explore interventions to enhance early mother-infant bonding and support informed breastfeeding decisions.
