Older mice are 10 times more sensitive to lethal bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) due to excessive tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and nitric oxide. This heightened sensitivity stems from disrupted hormonal control of cytokine production in aged animals.
