Anxiety in elderly hearing impaired persons

Summary

This study found that anxiety in elderly hearing impaired patients is linked to self-reported hearing issues, not objective hearing loss. Depression may be more strongly associated with perceived hearing handicap.

Background:

Hearing impairment is common in the elderly.
Anxiety can be a significant issue for older adults.
The relationship between hearing loss and anxiety requires further investigation.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the association between hearing impairment experiences and anxiety symptoms in elderly patients.
To explore the correlation between objective hearing measures, self-reported hearing problems, and anxiety levels.

Main Methods:

42 elderly patients with hearing impairment were recruited from a hearing aid center.
Participants completed the Hearing Coping Assessment and the Beck Anxiety Inventory.
Audiometric tests were conducted to assess hearing thresholds.

Main Results:

Anxiety and hearing problem scores were lower than in other studies.
Anxiety scores did not correlate with pure tone thresholds.
Anxiety scores showed a correlation with self-reported hearing problems (r = .31).

Conclusions:

Self-perceived hearing problems, rather than objective hearing loss, are associated with anxiety in this elderly cohort.
Depression may be more strongly linked to self-perceived hearing handicap than anxiety.
