Summary

Serum cholinesterase (PsChe) levels did not differ between patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and controls. However, PsChe levels correlated with anxiety severity and increased with treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Biochemistry
  • Psychiatry

Background:

  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a debilitating mental health condition.
  • Serum cholinesterase (PsChe) is an enzyme with potential roles in neurological function.
  • Previous research on PsChe in OCD is limited and sometimes contradictory.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate serum cholinesterase (PsChe) levels in drug-free patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
  • To explore the relationship between PsChe levels, anxiety severity, and the effects of pharmacological treatment in OCD patients.

Main Methods:

  • Serum cholinesterase (PsChe) levels were measured in 32 drug-free OCD patients and 32 matched healthy controls.
  • Anxiety severity was assessed using the Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety (HAM-A).

Related Experiment Videos

  • PsChe levels were re-evaluated after 10 weeks of antiobsessional pharmacological treatment.
  • Main Results:

    • No significant difference in PsChe levels was observed between OCD patients and healthy volunteers.
    • A significant positive correlation was found between PsChe levels and anxiety severity in OCD patients.
    • PsChe levels significantly increased in OCD patients after 10 weeks of pharmacological treatment.

    Conclusions:

    • PsChe levels are not significantly altered in untreated, drug-free OCD patients.
    • PsChe activity may be associated with state anxiety levels in OCD.
    • Pharmacological treatments for OCD can influence PsChe activity, suggesting a drug-enzyme interaction.
