Purpose of the Study:

To develop and empirically test an operational definition of homelessness.
To differentiate homeless individuals into meaningful subgroups.
To assess the reliability and validity of a new homelessness index.

Main Methods:

Developed a screening instrument measuring duration (time) and dwelling place (place) of homelessness.
Evaluated the instrument with 839 homeless substance-abusing men and women in detoxification centers.
Constructed a retrospective index to quantify the homeless experience.

Main Results:

The index successfully differentiated the sample into homeless and near-homeless subgroups.
Statistically significant differences were found in demographics, problems, and intervention success probability.
The index demonstrated moderate reliability (Cronbach's alpha = .72) and concurrent validity.

Conclusions:

Homelessness is not a unitary phenomenon and requires subgroup differentiation for effective intervention.
The developed operational definition and index are programmatically recommended for understanding homeless populations.
Considering individual differences is essential for therapeutic interventions targeting homelessness.
