Home use of low-concentration hydrofluoric acid can cause severe skin burns and necrosis. Prompt treatment with calcium compounds is crucial to prevent hypocalcemia and manage these dangerous household chemical injuries.

Observation:

  • A case of a 57-year-old woman with severe hand burns and skin necrosis after using a homemade furniture cleaner with 5% HF.
  • Initial presentation showed edema, erythema, and severe pain.
  • Despite initial treatment with calcium chloride, necrotic lesions developed on the fingers.

Findings:

  • Hydrofluoric acid causes delayed-onset caustic burns.
  • HF exposure can lead to hypocalcaemia due to calcium fluoride precipitation.
