Summary

Non-ulcer dyspepsia is a chronic condition with a benign long-term course, unrelated to peptic ulcer disease. Most patients continue to experience dyspeptic symptoms and some use analgesics regularly.

Background:

  • Non-ulcer dyspepsia (NUD) is a common functional gastrointestinal disorder.
  • Understanding the natural history of NUD is crucial for patient management and prognostication.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the long-term natural history and clinical course of non-ulcer dyspepsia.
  • To assess the incidence of complications and symptom persistence over a 10-year follow-up period.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective study of 271 out-patients diagnosed with NUD between 1980-1981.
  • Diagnosis based on dyspeptic symptoms, normal endoscopy, and absence of organic disease.
  • 10-year follow-up via medical records and patient questionnaires (165/195 respondents).
