    Summary

Renal hydatid cysts are rare and often misdiagnosed. Conservative surgical approaches, like partial pericystectomy, can successfully treat renal hydatidosis, avoiding nephrectomy and preserving kidney function.

    Area of Science:

    • Urology
    • Parasitology
    • Surgical Pathology

    Background:

    • Renal hydatid cyst is a rare condition.
    • Diagnosis can be challenging due to similarity with renal tumors and simple cysts.
    • Uncertainty in diagnosis may lead to unnecessary ablative surgery.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To report on thirty-nine cases of renal hydatid cysts.
    • To discuss the diagnostic value of investigations.
    • To advocate for conservative management to preserve renal tissue.

    Main Methods:

    • Review of thirty-nine cases of renal hydatid cysts.
    • Discussion of diagnostic investigations.
    • Surgical treatment focused on conservative methods, including partial pericystectomy.

    Main Results:

    • Conservative treatment, particularly partial pericystectomy, achieved complete therapeutic success in most cases.
    • Nephrectomy was avoided in a significant number of patients.
    • The chosen method involved resecting the exteriorized pericystium to the level of the renal parenchyma.

    Conclusions:

    • Conservative surgical management is effective for renal hydatidosis.
    • Preserving renal parenchyma is achievable, making nephrectomy often unnecessary.
    • Partial pericystectomy is a recommended approach for renal hydatid cyst treatment.
