    Summary

This study investigated ureteral peristalsis in pregnant patients with acute renal obstruction using ureterometry. Abnormal peristalsis, including retrograde waves, was observed in most patients, correlating with renography findings.

    Area of Science:

    • Urology
    • Nephrology
    • Obstetrics

    Background:

    • Acute renal outflow obstruction during pregnancy poses significant risks.
    • Understanding ureteral function is crucial for managing these complications.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate ureteral peristalsis patterns in pregnant patients with acute renal outflow obstruction.
    • To evaluate a new ureterometry technique for assessing peristalsis.

    Main Methods:

    • Employed a novel ureterometry technique to simultaneously record intraureteral pressure at three levels.
    • Analyzed the rate and direction of peristaltic waves.
    • Correlated findings with renography data.

    Main Results:

    • Retrograde peristalsis was identified in three of five patients.
    • One patient exhibited no peristaltic activity.
    • One patient showed normal antegrade peristalsis.
    • Ureterometry findings aligned with acute-stage renography.

    Conclusions:

    • Pregnancy with acute renal obstruction is associated with diverse and often abnormal ureteral peristalsis.
    • The new ureterometry technique effectively characterizes ureteral dynamics.
    • Findings highlight the importance of assessing ureteral function in this patient group.
