A novel Illuminated High Contrast Macular Grid (IHCMG) accurately assesses central visual field defects in low vision patients. This method is a simple, rapid alternative to automated perimetry and superior to conventional Amsler grids.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of a modified Amsler grid, the Illuminated High Contrast Macular Grid (IHCMG), for analyzing central visual field defects.
  • To compare the IHCMG technique with automated perimetry and conventional Amsler grid testing.

  • Eighteen visually impaired patients (28 eyes) underwent three central threshold visual field tests.
  • Tests included automated perimetry (Humphrey 10-2), conventional Amsler Grid, and the IHCMG.

    • Conventional Amsler grid significantly under-evaluated defects compared to automated perimetry (p < 0.01 for number, p > 0.001 for area).

    Conclusions:

    • The IHCMG provides a simple, rapid, and accurate method for analyzing the central 10 degrees of the visual field in low vision patients.
    • IHCMG is a viable alternative to more complex and expensive automated perimetry systems.
