Summary

This study reports a rare case of spinal cord ependymoma in a young woman. The encapsulated tumor was successfully removed, leading to significant neurologic recovery.

Background:

  • Ependymoma is a central nervous system glial tumor.
  • Intradural extramedullary spinal cord ependymomas are exceptionally rare.

Observation:

  • A 24-year-old woman presented with myelopathy.
  • MRI revealed an intradural tumor spanning C4-T3.
  • The extramedullary tumor was easily resected surgically.

Findings:

  • Histology confirmed an anaplastic ependymoma.
  • The tumor was encapsulated and not attached to the spinal cord.
  • Near-complete neurologic recovery was achieved post-surgery.

Implications:

  • Suggests a possible origin from ectopic ependymal cells.
