Acute pancreatitis associated with brucellosis

Background:

Brucellosis is a systemic infection caused by Brucella species, often associated with various organ involvements.
Acute pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas, typically presenting with abdominal pain and elevated pancreatic enzymes.
While Brucella infections are known to affect multiple organs, pancreatic involvement is exceptionally rare.

Observation:

A patient diagnosed with acute brucellosis due to Brucella melitensis developed acute pancreatitis.
Clinical presentation and laboratory findings were consistent with both brucellosis and acute pancreatitis.
The patient's condition required intensive management for both infections.

Findings:

This report documents the second known case of acute pancreatitis occurring in conjunction with Brucella infection.
The findings suggest a potential, albeit uncommon, etiological link between Brucella melitensis and acute pancreatitis.
Further investigation is warranted to understand the pathogenic mechanisms involved.

Implications:

This case expands the spectrum of known complications associated with Brucella infections.
Clinicians should consider Brucella infection in the differential diagnosis of pancreatitis, especially in endemic areas.
This underscores the importance of recognizing rare presentations of infectious diseases for timely and appropriate patient care.
