Summary

True weight maintainers, defined as those with minimal weight fluctuations, are predominantly normal weight individuals. Obese individuals are more likely to be non-maintainers and engage in dieting.

Area of Science:

  • Human physiology
  • Weight management research
  • Obesity studies

Background:

  • Long-term weight maintenance is a critical public health concern.
  • Understanding characteristics of weight maintainers can inform obesity interventions.
  • Previous studies have not fully characterized individuals with stable weight over time.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify and characterize individuals who successfully maintain their weight over a five-year period.
  • To compare the physiological and behavioral characteristics of weight maintainers versus non-maintainers.
  • To investigate the role of dieting in weight maintenance.

Main Methods:

  • Longitudinal study of 385 normal weight and obese adults over five annual visits.
  • Classification of subjects into weight maintenance (M), gain (G), or loss (L) categories based on +/- 5 lb change.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Cross-tabulation with a Fluctuation Index (F0-F4) to define 'True Maintainers' (M and F0).
  • Main Results:

    • Nineteen percent (n=73) were True Maintainers, with three times more normal weight than obese subjects.
    • True Maintainers had lower BMI, body fat percentage, and waist-hip ratio compared to Non-Maintainers.
    • Non-Maintainers, especially obese individuals, were more likely to report dieting behaviors.

    Conclusions:

    • True weight maintainers represent a distinct group with lower adiposity and less weight variability.
    • Obesity is associated with a lower likelihood of being a True Maintainer.
    • Further research into the behaviors and physiology of True Maintainers is warranted for effective weight management strategies.
