["Cold" thyroid nodules (author's transl)]

D Borm, B Fleischer

    Deutsche Medizinische Wochenschrift (1946)
    |May 13, 1977

    Summary

Thyroid scintigraphy showing cold nodules significantly increases the likelihood of detecting thyroid carcinoma. Differentiated thyroid cancers, particularly follicular and papillary types, were most common in this surgical cohort.

    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Nuclear Medicine
    • Endocrinology

    Context:

    • Thyroid nodules are common findings.
    • Diagnostic imaging, including scintigraphy, plays a crucial role in evaluating thyroid nodules.
    • Surgical intervention is often indicated for suspicious thyroid lesions.

    Purpose:

    • To statistically evaluate the correlation between thyroid scintigraphy findings and the presence of thyroid carcinoma.
    • To analyze the histological types of diagnosed thyroid carcinomas.
    • To assess the surgical management and outcomes for thyroid cancer patients.

    Summary:

    • A retrospective analysis of 419 thyroid operations revealed 31 cases of thyroid carcinoma.
    • Cold nodules on scintigraphy were associated with a higher incidence of carcinoma (24/246 cases) compared to inhomogeneous activity (4/88 cases).
    • Follicular (64.5%) and papillary (29%) carcinomas were the predominant histological subtypes, indicating a prevalence of differentiated thyroid cancers.

    Impact:

    • Highlights the diagnostic value of 'cold' thyroid nodules in scintigraphy for identifying malignancy.
    • Provides insights into the epidemiological and histological characteristics of thyroid cancer in a surgical setting.
    • Informs clinical decision-making regarding the surgical management of thyroid nodules based on imaging features.
