Area of Science:

  • Immunology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Genetics

Background:

  • Down syndrome is linked to immune system disorders.
  • Hypothyroidism, diabetes mellitus, and celiac disease are common in Down syndrome patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of celiac disease in individuals with Down syndrome in southern Sweden.
  • To investigate the presence of antigliadin antibodies (AGA) as an indicator for celiac disease in this population.

Main Methods:

  • Assessed antigliadin antibodies (AGA) in 54 patients with Down syndrome.
  • Performed intestinal biopsies on 19 patients with elevated AGA.
  • Calculated minimum celiac disease prevalence based on diagnosed cases and antibody screening.

Main Results:

  • 22 out of 54 patients (40.7%) had elevated AGA.
  • Nine out of 19 biopsied patients (47.4%) showed villous atrophy, indicative of celiac disease.
  • The minimum prevalence of celiac disease in Down syndrome in southern Sweden was 16.9% (11 out of 65 individuals).

Conclusions:

  • There is a high minimum prevalence of celiac disease in individuals with Down syndrome in southern Sweden.
  • Screening for celiac disease is recommended for patients with Down syndrome due to the significant association.
