An 8 French urethral catheter does not significantly obstruct the urethra in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia. This finding is crucial for accurate pressure-flow studies in diagnosing lower urinary tract symptoms.

Background:

  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) commonly causes lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in men.
  • Urethral catheterization is often used in diagnostic procedures, but its potential obstructive effects are debated.
  • Accurate pressure-flow studies are essential for diagnosing and managing LUTS in BPH patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the obstructive effect of an 8 French (Ch.) urethral catheter on urethral pressure-flow relationships.
  • To evaluate the impact of catheterization on key urodynamic parameters in men with BPH and LUTS.

Main Methods:

  • A comparative study involving 59 men with LUTS due to BPH.
  • Combined pressure-flow studies were conducted during two voiding cycles: one with and one without an 8 Ch. urethral catheter.

    Conclusions:

    • An 8 Ch. urethral catheter does not appear to cause significant urethral obstruction in men with BPH.
    • The findings suggest that standard catheterization practices may not unduly influence pressure-flow study results.
    • This has important implications for the clinical interpretation of pressure-flow studies in the context of LUTS evaluation.
