Postpartum pleural effusion is common after normal delivery, affecting 23% of women. This condition, detected via thoracic ultrasonography, appears to be clinically insignificant and unrelated to labor factors.

Background:

  • Labor conditions may predispose individuals to pleural effusion.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the frequency of postpartum pleural effusion using thoracic ultrasonography.
  • To assess the clinical significance of postpartum pleural effusion.

Main Methods:

  • Thoracic ultrasonography was employed to examine 31 postpartum women and 22 healthy nonpregnant controls.
  • Examinations were conducted in both supine and seated positions via an intercostal approach.
  • Data on age, weight gain, labor duration, fluid administration, and oxytocin use were collected.

Main Results:

  • Pleural effusion was detected in 7 of 31 (23%) postpartum women within 1-24 hours of normal delivery.
  • No pleural effusion was observed in the nonpregnant control group.
  • No correlation was found between postpartum pleural effusion and maternal age, pregnancy weight gain, labor duration, intravenous fluid use, or oxytocin administration.

Conclusions:

  • Postpartum pleural effusion is a common finding after normal delivery.
  • The presence of postpartum pleural effusion does not appear to have clinical significance.
  • Thoracic ultrasonography is a useful tool for detecting subclinical pleural effusions in the postpartum period.
