Summary

Lichen amyloidosus may not respond to dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) treatment. Topical corticosteroids were effective in improving lesions in a patient refractory to DMSO.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Histopathology

Background:

  • Lichen amyloidosus is a chronic skin condition characterized by amyloid deposition.
  • Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is a reported treatment option for lichen amyloidosus.

Observation:

  • A case study of a Japanese woman with chronic extensive lichen amyloidosus on her trunk.
  • Suspected etiology linked to a 10-year history of using nylon towels.

Findings:

  • The patient's lichen amyloidosus lesions were refractory to topical dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) ointment.
  • Histological examination confirmed persistent amyloid deposits despite DMSO treatment.
  • Topical corticosteroid administration resulted in gradual clinical improvement.

Implications:

  • Highlights the potential for treatment resistance to dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) in lichen amyloidosus.
  • Suggests topical corticosteroids as an alternative therapeutic option for refractory cases.
  • Underscores the importance of considering patient history, such as friction from materials like nylon towels, in managing lichen amyloidosus.
