Summary

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection may be linked to rosacea, a skin condition. Studies show a high prevalence of H. pylori in rosacea patients, suggesting a potential causal relationship.

Area of Science:

  • Gastroenterology
  • Dermatology
  • Microbiology

Background:

  • Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a bacterium commonly linked to gastritis, peptic ulcers, and gastric cancer.
  • Dermatologists are often unaware of H. pylori's potential impact on skin conditions.
  • H. pylori has been previously associated with chronic urticaria and rosacea.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the potential etiologic relationship between H. pylori infection and rosacea.
  • To explore the prevalence of H. pylori in patients diagnosed with rosacea.

Main Methods:

  • Gastric mucosal histology and serological tests were used to detect H. pylori in rosacea patients.
  • Clinical outcomes of metronidazole treatment were correlated with H. pylori status.
  • Comparison of H. pylori prevalence in rosacea patients versus the general population (implied).

Main Results:

  • 84% of 31 rosacea patients showed H. pylori positive on gastric histology.
  • 100% of 20 patients with both histology and serology confirmed H. pylori positivity.
  • Clinical improvement with metronidazole coincided with H. pylori eradication, suggesting a link.

Conclusions:

  • H. pylori infection is strongly suggested as a contributing factor in rosacea, particularly erythrotic rosacea.
  • The gastrointestinal disturbances associated with rosacea may be linked to H. pylori.
  • Further large-scale case-control studies are needed to firmly establish a causal relationship.
