Fifteen years of medical encoding in the Diogene HIS

Obtaining good quality encoded medical information is a major issue for patient documentation, hospital management, and epidemiological statistics. In this paper, the experience of encoding medical information in Geneva since 1978 is described, following 1988 IMIA WG6 recommendations: "There is a need to enhance the involvement of physicians and other health care professionals in the original entry of medical and other relevant data to increase its accuracy and quality".
