Summary

Growth hormone (GH) did not prevent corticosteroid-induced diaphragm atrophy in rats. This study found that GH did not reverse the negative effects of triamcinolone on diaphragm structure and function.

Background:

  • Corticosteroids, like triamcinolone (TR), can induce muscle atrophy.
  • Diaphragm dysfunction is a concern with corticosteroid therapy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if growth hormone (GH) administration can prevent diaphragm structural and functional abnormalities induced by short-term triamcinolone (TR) treatment.
  • To assess the impact of TR and co-administered GH on diaphragm weight, fiber cross-sectional area, and contractile properties.

Main Methods:

  • Male rats were divided into three groups: control (CTL), triamcinolone (TR), and triamcinolone plus growth hormone (TR-GH).
  • Animals received daily intramuscular injections for 10 days.

    • Growth hormone (GH) does not prevent corticosteroid-induced diaphragm abnormalities under the conditions of this study.
    • Reduced nutritional intake associated with triamcinolone administration may contribute to the observed effects.
    • Further research is needed to explore potential interventions for corticosteroid-induced muscle atrophy.
