Preservation of renal function and the risk of hyperfiltration nephropathy

The long-term impact of unilateral nephrectomy on renal function has been reviewed in patients who have undergone donor nephrectomy or nephrectomy in childhood as a result of unilateral renal disease. there has been no adverse impact on renal function. In the setting of a normal contralateral kidney, and in the absence of any urologic or systemic disorder that may affect future renal function, it is not necessary to perform nephron-sparing surgery for the purpose of preservation of renal function.
