Summary

Spindle cell and pleomorphic lipomas are rare adipose tumors with unclear origins. This study reveals their similar ultrastructure and suggests prelipoblastic mesenchymal cells interact with mast cells.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pathology
  • Cell Biology

Background:

  • Spindle cell and pleomorphic lipomas are rare benign adipose tissue tumors.
  • The histogenesis of these lipomas remains poorly understood.
  • Pleomorphic lipoma has not been previously studied ultrastructurally.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the morphology and ultrastructure of spindle cell and pleomorphic lipoma.
  • To investigate the cellular origins and interactions within these rare tumors.

Main Methods:

  • Examination of the ultrastructure of 6 cases of spindle cell and pleomorphic lipoma.
  • Analysis of cellular morphology and interactions using electron microscopy.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Both lipoma types exhibited similar ultrastructural features, including an interrupted basal lamina, lipid vacuoles, and abundant rough endoplasmic reticulum (rER).
  • Mast cells were prominent and closely associated with both spindle and pleomorphic cells in all cases.
  • Conclusions:

    • It is proposed that the characteristic cells in these tumors are prelipoblastic mesenchymal cells.
    • The study discusses the potential significance of mast cell and tumor cell interactions in the pathogenesis of these lipomas.
