    Summary

    Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) causes temporary skin whitening in white individuals due to vasoconstriction. This effect was not observed in black skin, suggesting differences in vascular response.

    Background:

    • Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a common chemical with various applications.

    Observation:

    • Transient blanching of nonacral skin was observed after topical application of a 3% H2O2 solution.
    • This blanching phenomenon was consistently reproducible in individuals with white skin.
    • The effect was not reproducible in individuals with black skin.

    • The skin blanching occurred within 30 to 300 seconds of H2O2 contact.
    • The duration of the blanching effect ranged from 10 to 30 minutes.
    • It is hypothesized that H2O2 induces transient vasoconstriction in superficial dermal blood vessels.
