Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Retinal Diseases

Background:

  • Macular holes can cause significant vision impairment.
  • Distinguishing between different types of macular holes is crucial for accurate diagnosis and treatment.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To characterize the clinical presentation and features of microholes of the macula.
  • To differentiate microholes of the macula from other macular pathologies.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 14 patients presenting with acute symptoms.
  • Clinical examination and optical coherence tomography (OCT) findings were reviewed.

Main Results:

  • Patients experienced acute central scotoma and mild to moderate visual acuity loss.
  • Funduscopic examination revealed sharply demarcated, small macular holes (50-133 micrometers).
  • All patients showed stable or improved visual outcomes on follow-up.

Conclusions:

  • Macular microholes are associated with acute vitreous detachment from the fovea.
  • These findings help distinguish macular microholes from Gass stage 2 idiopathic macular holes.
