Traditional definitions of residency training quality often focus on educational structures and processes.
A customer-centered, outcomes-oriented approach, common in other industries, offers a more comprehensive view.

Purpose of the Study:

To propose a general definition of quality in residency training.
To describe a process for developing this definition.

Main Methods:

Identified key customers of residency training programs (trainees, patients, etc.).
Considered the needs and perspectives of these identified customers.
Developed a multidimensional definition of quality.

Main Results:

The proposed definition of quality is multidimensional.
It incorporates clinical proficiency, socioeconomic dimensions, and ethical concerns.
The definition is customer-centered and outcomes-oriented.

Conclusions:

A new, comprehensive definition of quality in residency training has been developed.
Further work is needed to operationalize this multidimensional definition for practical application.
