Thermal problems in plethysmography and pressure/volume recording

L Vanggaard, J Ostergaard

    Summary

Modern pressure transducers can detect heat of compression during volume changes, causing calibration curve errors. Adding a heat sink, like copper mesh, in plethysmographs can reduce these measurement artifacts for accurate volume pulse analysis.

    Area of Science:

    • Biomedical Engineering
    • Physiological Measurement

    Background:

    • Modern pressure transducers can detect rapid pressure changes.
    • Heat of compression can cause overshoot or hysteresis in calibration curves during volume changes.
    • This phenomenon is particularly relevant when evaluating rapid volume changes, such as in volume pulse recordings.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the impact of heat of compression on pressure transducer readings.
    • To evaluate methods for mitigating measurement artifacts in plethysmography.
    • To improve the accuracy of volume change measurements, especially during rapid physiological events.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilizing fast-responding pressure transducers to record pressure changes concomitant with volume changes.
    • Introducing a heat sink (e.g., copper mesh) within the plethysmograph's air space.
    • Analyzing calibration curves to observe overshoot and hysteresis phenomena.

    Main Results:

    • Fast-responding transducers may record heat of compression artifacts.
    • A heat sink effectively absorbs heat, diminishing overshoot phenomena in calibration curves.
    • The effect is less significant in classical venous occlusion plethysmography but crucial for volume pulse analysis.

    Conclusions:

    • Heat of compression is a relevant artifact in plethysmography using modern transducers for rapid volume change assessment.
    • Implementing heat sinks can reduce these artifacts, enhancing measurement accuracy.
    • Careful consideration of thermal effects is necessary for precise physiological volume measurements.
