Summary

This study found that skeletal fluorosis significantly lowers serum testosterone levels in males. Even individuals exposed to fluoride but without symptoms showed reduced testosterone, suggesting fluoride toxicity impacts male reproductive health.

Background:

  • Skeletal fluorosis is a debilitating bone disease caused by chronic fluoride overexposure.
  • Hormonal imbalances, particularly in reproductive hormones, are suspected but not well-established in skeletal fluorosis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate serum testosterone concentrations in males with skeletal fluorosis.
  • To assess the impact of fluoride toxicity on male reproductive hormonal status.

  • Serum testosterone levels were measured in skeletal fluorosis patients (n=30).
  • Comparisons were made with two control groups: healthy males in low-fluoride areas (Control 1, n=26) and males living with patients but asymptomatic (Control 2, n=16).
