Summary

Contralateral hyperhidrosis, or increased sweating, can occur months after a lateral medullary infarct. Evaluating sympathetic skin response aids in understanding these sweating disorders.

Observation:

  • A subset of patients with lateral medullary lesions developed increased sweating on the side opposite the lesion.
  • This contralateral hyperhidrosis manifested 6-8 months post-stroke, triggered by heat, stress, and physical exertion.
  • Some patients also exhibited reduced or absent sweating on the ipsilesional side.

Findings:

  • Electrophysiological studies revealed significant asymmetry in sympathetic skin response (SSR) post-stroke.
  • SSR was notably higher on the contralateral side compared to the ipsilesional side.
