    Summary

    Early detection of bone necrosis, a complication from diving, may be possible. Measuring 24-hour urinary hydroxyproline showed significant increases days after bone necrosis was induced in rabbits, preceding radiographic changes.

    Background:

    • Aseptic necrosis of bone is a chronic complication associated with deep-sea diving and compressed-air work.
    • Radiographic diagnosis of bone necrosis is delayed by months, as changes take time to develop after the causal incident.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate urinary hydroxyproline as a potential early biomarker for bone necrosis.
    • To assess the temporal relationship between induced bone necrosis and hydroxyproline excretion in a rabbit model.

    Main Methods:

    • Experimental induction of aseptic bone necrosis in rabbits via intra-arterial injection of glass microspheres.
