Summary

Superficial basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common type on the neck. This study analyzed 97 BCCs from 93 patients, finding superficial types predominated.

Area of Science:

  • Dermatology
  • Oncology
  • Surgical Pathology

Background:

  • Basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) on the neck are frequently observed as superficial types in Mohs surgery practices.
  • This observation prompted a detailed investigation into BCC characteristics on the neck.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze a consecutive series of basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) treated in a Mohs surgery unit.
  • To characterize the histological subtypes, patient demographics, and lesion characteristics of BCCs on the neck.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 97 BCCs from 93 patients treated between 1988 and 1993.
  • Histological typing of BCCs from permanent sections obtained by excisional debulking.
  • Correlation of BCC type with patient age, race, sex, location on the neck, and lesion status (primary or recurrent).

Main Results:

  • Superficial BCC (38.1%) and mixed-superficial BCC (30.0%) were the most prevalent types among 97 lesions analyzed.
  • The majority of patients were Caucasian (100%) with an average age of 62.7 years; males outnumbered females 3.4:1.
  • The most frequent neck location was the skin over the superior sternocleidomastoid muscles; 51% of tumors were primary and 49% recurrent.

Conclusions:

  • Basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) on the neck predominantly present as the superficial histological subtype.
  • Understanding BCC distribution and types on the neck aids in surgical planning and patient management.
