Metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma, a rare benign tumor, exhibits malignant behavior. Flow cytometry revealed aneuploidy in recurrent and metastatic lesions in one of two reported cases.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Pathology
  • Genetics

Background:

  • Metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma is a rare salivary gland tumor.
  • It is characterized by benign histology but malignant clinical behavior, including metastasis.

Observation:

  • Two cases of metastasizing pleomorphic adenoma were analyzed.
  • Flow cytometry was utilized to study the cytometric profiles of the tumors.

Findings:

  • Recurrent adenoma and its metastasis demonstrated aneuploidy in one of the reported cases.
  • Aneuploidy may be associated with the malignant behavior of this rare tumor.

Implications:

  • This finding suggests a potential role for flow cytometry in assessing the risk of metastasis.
